작품을 하며 - 또하나의 단상 '힘'(Strength)
차와 우마차와 경운기, 자전거가 달리는 시골 아스팔트길을 걷다보면 봄의 따스한 햇볕이 검은 아스팔트길에 아주 선명히 아지랑이를 피운다. 그 너무나 선명히 보이는 아스팔트길의 중앙을 보던 시선을 갓길로 옮기면서 놀랄만한 생명의 힘을 본다.
따스한 기온과 햇볕으로 두팔벌려 격하게 안아주는 검은 아스팔트의 양쪽 변방에 뾰루지처럼 톡 튀어나온걸 유심히 보게 되는 순간, 와~~~ 이게 어떻게 가능하지? 어떻게?
도저히 학교에서 배운 지식과 상식으로는 이해가 가지 않았다.
그건 알 수 없는 신비한 자연의 힘이다. 끈적한 물질과 조그만 돌로 버무려져 평평한 지면을 만들기 의해 무거운 기계로 눌러 다져진 두껍고 단단한 아스팔트를 뚫고 나오는 힘을 무엇으로 설명 할 수 있을까?
Sarang Mountain 에 정착한 후 늘 봄에는 아스팔트를 뚫고 나오는 자연의 경이(驚異)를 내 둥지 주위에서도 그 놀랍고, 경탄을 금치 못했던 경험들을 소환한다.
그게 꽃이든 풀이든, 여리고 여린 새싹들이 가을에 치우지 못한 겹겹의 두꺼운 낙엽을 관통해 따스한 봄 기운에 안기고, 햇볕에 몸부비며 눈부셔하는 연초록 잎을 볼라치면 그들의 생명의 투지에 감탄하지 않을 수 없다. 곧 그 경이가 일어날 봄이 모퉁이를 돌고 있다.
흑연과 점토를 섞어 열로 굳힌 연필심을 담은 몸을 쥐고 있는 사람의 손끝에 어떤 힘으로 넓은 세계에 자신의 안위(安慰)만을 위함이 아닌, 공정하고 정의로운 사회를 만들기 위해 글을 쓰는 곧은 마음의 힘을 누가 갖고 사는지 깨어있는 자들은 안다.
나의 안위가 우선인가? 나라가 우선인가? 어느 것을 위함을 먼저 생각하는지에 대인배와 소인배의 그릇을 알 수 있다.

가을 어느날, 밖에서 목공일을 하던 중 연필이 필요해 작업실로 가 두개의 통에 꽂혀있는 많은 필기구 중 그 흔한 HB연필이 보이지 않았다. 연필이 왜 없지...왜 없는거야? 있을 만한 곳을 다 뒤져도 없었다. 아 그랬구나...전문가용 연필이 아닌 단순 필기용의 연필이 이미 필요치 않은 시대에 와 있구나를 감지하는 순간 연필이 갖는 여러 의미 중 '연필=문(언론)'이 연상 되었고 작금의 세상엔 대한 많은 의미를 갖을 듯해 바로 연필작품을 만들기 시작했다.
사실 문명의 발달로 인한 아날로그의 시대를 뒤로하고 디지털시대의 도래는 급속한 문명의 지속적인 변화로 기존의 친근히 여기던 물품에서부터 일의 터전에까지 전자화,인공지능 로봇화로 대체되고 있는 상황의 시대적 상징으로 연필을 조형물화 한것이다.
조지 오웰의 ’1984’가 미래사회를 불안한 시각으로 예견한 것이 현재와 흡사함을 느낀다. 엄청난 정보의 날조, 왜곡, 음모 등이 판을 치는 세상, 더욱이 뉴미디어를 통한 가짜뉴스의 횡행, 이를 수단으로 이익을 추구하는 개인이나 집단의 창궐은 국가와 사회에 대한 진실을 알고 싶은 개인에겐 더욱 불편한 스트레스를 갖게 하고 있다.
끊임없는 인간의 순수한 호기심의 탐구와 끝없는 욕망, 욕심이 양념된 탐욕의 결과물로 이루어진 그 미래의 오늘 늘 옆에 있던 친근한 물건이나 소중한 관계의 사람들 –늘 가깝게 여겼고, 소중하게 생각했고, 가까이 두고 만졌고, 보았던 그것이 물건이었고 사람이었던간에– 의식 또는 무의식 중에 잊기도 잃기도 한 것들을 연필 작품을 통해 상기하고자 한다.
'The Last Pencil on Earth.'를 통해, 우린 늘 그런 주변에 마음과 두 눈을 줄 여유가 없는 부지불식의 현상에 대한 불안정한 위치를 자각하며, 현재의 모든 우리 주변의 것에 최대의 사랑을 느끼고 주고 받는 그런 삶을 구가 하길 바라는 마음을 담았다. 그래서 부제로 '있을때 잘 해라- Do it well when it is being.' 했다. 이점은 자연과 문명, 인간의 삼각관계에서 균형의 힘은 ’사랑’인 작품세계를 표현하는 일관성을 가지고 있다.
또한 인간에게 잊혀져간 다양한 그들의 삶의 도구와 직업, IT와 AI가 발전으로 우리가 선택의 여지 없이 문명의 흐름 속에 역행 할 수 없는 그 무엇들은 슬그머니 우리의 일상에 들어왔다. 그 무엇들의 출현에 적응과 부적응의 시간에 묻어가고 있다. 그것의 상징으로 'The First Electronic Pen on Earth'를 만들었다.

“Sarang” means love in Korean and Sarang Mountain is a nickname I’ve chosen for my home and art studio. It is located in a beautiful region proximate to Schunemunk mountainside, where I’ve dedicated a considerable amount of time and energy cultivating a garden, building a workshop, planting fruit trees and a flower island where a rundown swimming pool used to be. Additionally, I built two small bridges across a creek and a wooden pavilion where one can rest and reflect. I also built a large stone wall from stones scattered around the property. All of this was built by hand over a span of eight years.
Moreover, during that span of time, I also held three solo exhibitions, where I showcased all of my new artwork. I have been thoroughly enjoying the wide open space, as it fosters a conducive environment for me to generously pour my heart, mind and soul into my work.
With the passage of time at Sarang Mountain, I’ve been blessed to experience the changes from Spring to Winter, as well as the stark contrast from morning and night. Over a span of eight years, I have captured these moments through the lens of a painter, not a professional photographer. I have selected 62 photos for display at the exhibition. Along with the photo exhibition, I will be unveiling for the very first time, a new three-dimensional work that I call “The Last Pencil on Earth.”
One day, during fall, while I was performing some carpentry work, I needed a pencil. I immediately went to my studio to look for one, but could not manage to find a standard HB (hard black) pencil. I looked everywhere for one but still could not find one, so I kept thinking to myself, “Why is there no pencil around…” And at that moment, I found myself caught up in a deep thought. My current predicament highlighted the current state of the world. Where a pencil was the tool used to facilitate sharing of knowledge and information, as time passed with major advancements in technology and with the arrival and advancement of the digital era, the pencil became the analog and past of the present. With continuous advancements of the digital world, a pencil is very much the opposite of those advancements.
In George Orwell’s 1984, he predicted a dystopian future in which the world was full of misinformation, fabrication, distortion and conspiracy. Ironically, there are some parallels between our society today and that of George Orwell’s. The constant misinformation campaign that is pervasive in society causes undue stress for those who are unable to distinguish the truth and facts and are constantly being manipulated. The future, which became today as a result of humankind’s endless curiosity, desire, greed, and familiar objects or those that we cherished that were always around us - regardless of whether that was an object or a person, things which have always been familiar to us, cherished, touched, seen, and kept close - I would like to remind ourselves of these things we have forgotten or lost, either consciously or unconsciously, through this pencil work.
Through 'The Last Pencil on Earth,’ I hope that we become aware of the unstable position of being unaware, where we cannot afford to give our hearts and eyes to those around us, and live a life where we feel the greatest love for everything around us today. So for this reason, the subtitle is named ‘Do it well when it is being.’ This is in consistency with the idea that love is the balancing power in the love triangle between nature, civilization, and humankind. Moreover, with the advancement of IT and AI, many tools, jobs, and so forth have disappeared. Without a choice or time to adapt, we have been subject to the vast changes in our civilization and it has become a part of our daily lives. As such, I wanted to symbolize this sentiment with 'The First Electronic Pen on Earth’ artwork that I created.
