가라지 아트센터에서 2024년의 마지막을 Mary Tooley Parker 작가의 개인전으로 마무리한다. 10월 5일(이하 미동부시간)부터 27일까지 열리는 ‘Textile Composition’ 전시에서는 독특한 섬유 작업들로 표현된 따뜻한 작품들을 감상할 수 있다.
메리 툴리 파커 작가는 사람과 자연에 대한 사실적인 해석을 섬세하게 엮어내며, 기억, 지역 역사, 시각적 이미지를 바탕으로 한 영감(靈感)을 작품에 담아낸다. 그녀의 작업은 전통적인 공예와 현대 미술의 경계에 위치하며, 섬유 예술의 혁신적인 재료 사용으로 그 경계를 넓혀간다.
작가는 신구 섬유를 포함한 다양한 재료를 사용하여 울, 면, 실크 천뿐만 아니라 양털, 손으로 짠 실, 금속 섬유, 자전거 장식 리본, 신발끈과 같은 비전통적인 요소들을 작품에 통합한다. 대담한 색상 조합은 자연 및 합성 염료를 사용해 생동감 있고 섬세한 색상 팔레트로 나타나, 시각적으로 다채로울 뿐만 아니라 촉각적으로도 매력적인 작품을 만든다. 다감각적 경험은 관람객이 작품과 더 깊이 교감할 수 있도록 유도하며, 공예와 순수 미술의 경계를 허물고 있다.
이번 전시에서는 밝고 재치 있는 ‘인테리어’ 연작중 두 작품을 포함하여 파커가 지난 몇 년간 작업한 ‘NOW’ 시리즈의 7점이 전시된다. 작품들은 친구와 가족들의 반려견들에게 헌정(獻呈)된 것으로, 그들 중 일부는 이제 나이가 많거나 세상을 떠났고, BB건 상처를 가진 구조견들처럼 과거의 흔적을 간직하고 있다. 현재에 충실히 살아가는 이 개들은 무조건적인 사랑을 구현(具現)한다. NOW 시리즈의 일부 작품들은 다른 곳에서 전시된 적이 있지만, 이번에 통일된 컬렉션으로 함께 전시되는 것은 처음입니다.
파커는 평범하고 소박한 재료를 통해 강력한 예술적 메시지를 전달하며, 관람객들에게 익숙한 세계를 완전히 새로운 방식으로 보고, 느낄 수 있도록 새로운 시각을 제공한다.
10월 5일(토) 오후 4시부터 6시까지 오프닝 리셉션이 있으며, 10월 19일에는 작가와의 대화, 아티스트 토크가 진행된다. 전시회와 아티스트 토크는 무료이며 일반에 공개되지만 사전 예약이 필요하다.

About the Artist
메리 툴리 파커는 독창적인 러그 제작 방식으로 잘 알려진 섬유 예술가이다. 뉴욕대학교 티시 예술학교에서 무용 학사 학위를 받은 파커는 시각 예술로 창의적 재능을 성공적으로 전환했다. 그녀의 작업은 전통적인 공예의 경계를 넓히며, 비전통적인 재료와 기법을 활용해 생동감 있고 표현력 넘치는 작품을 창조한다. 파커의 작품은 보스턴의 LaiSun Keane Gallery와 뉴욕시의 The Untitled Space와 같은 명망 있는 전시장에서 개인전을 열었고, Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art와 Arnot Art Museum의 단체전에서도 소개된 바 있다.
2015년, 민속/전통 예술 분야에서 뉴욕 예술 재단(NYFA) 펠로십을 수상하며 이 분야에 대한 공로를 인정받았다. 올해, 파커는 민속/전통 예술 부문에서 두 번째 NYSCA/NYFA 펠로십을 수상하며 섬유 예술 분야에서의 그녀의 입지를 더욱 공고히 다졌다. 그녀의 작품은 2019년 Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Association National Juried Show에서 최우수상을 수상하는 등 비평가들의 찬사를 받았다.

Textile Art Reimagined: Mary Tooley Parker to Close Out 2024 with Solo Exhibition at The Garage Art Center
Bayside, NY, September 20, 2024 – The Garage Art Center is proud to conclude the year with a solo exhibition by renowned textile artist Mary Tooley Parker. Titled "Textile Composition", the exhibition will run from October 5 to 27, 2024, showcasing Parker’s unique and heartwarming textile works.
Known for her intricate interpretations of people and nature, Parker draws inspiration from memories, local history, and visual imagery to craft works that reside at the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary art. Her innovative use of materials in textile art challenges the boundaries of both mediums.
Parker’s work incorporates a wide array of materials, blending traditional fibers such as wool, cotton, and silk with unconventional elements like fleece, handspun yarn, metallic fibers, bicycle streamers, and shoelaces. Her bold use of natural and synthetic dyes creates vibrant, nuanced color palettes that are as visually captivating as they are tactilely engaging. This multi-sensory approach encourages deeper interaction with the works, blurring the lines between craft and fine art.
This exhibition will also feature seven pieces from Parker’s "NOW" series, a body of work created over the past few years as a tribute to beloved dogs of friends and family. Some of these dogs are now old or have passed on, while others, like rescue dogs with BB gun wounds, bear the scars of their past. Living fully in the moment, these dogs embody unconditional love. Though some of the "NOW" series works have been exhibited elsewhere, this is the first time they will be displayed together as a unified collection.
Through her work, Parker elevates humble, everyday materials into powerful artistic statements, offering viewers a fresh perspective on the familiar world around them.

Join us for an engaging and interactive artist talk with award-winning textile artist Mary Tooley Parker, whose work has been featured in galleries and museums from New York City to London and Denmark. In this 90-minute session, Parker will explore the rich world of rug hooking, a traditional American folk art that she has elevated to contemporary fine art status. Parker's artwork focuses on realistic interpretations of people and nature, drawing inspiration from memories, local history, and visual imagery. Her innovative approach incorporates a diverse range of materials, including new and recycled wool, cotton, silk fabrics, fleece, handspun yarn, and even metallic fibers, all brought to life with both natural and synthetic dyes.
During this talk, Parker will introduce the audience to the art of rug hooking and its history as an American folk art, sharing images of antique rugs to provide historical context. In addition to her recent work displayed in the gallery, she'll also showcase examples of her own work, demonstrating various hooking styles and discussing how textile art engages viewers differently than traditional fine art, stimulating unique sensory and emotional responses. She'll explore the connection between her work and the rich tradition of women expressing themselves through fiber arts.
As a special treat, attendees will have the opportunity to try their hand at rug hooking, with Parker providing a few different ongoing projects to show visitors how it's done and give them an opportunity to try it out themselves. This event offers a unique opportunity to engage with an artist whose work is part of prestigious collections, including the Northwestern Mutual corporate art collection. Don't miss this chance to explore the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary art with Mary Tooley Parker.

About the Artist
Mary Tooley Parker is a textile artist known for her innovative approach to hooked rug making. With a BFA in Dance from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, Parker has successfully transitioned her creative talents into the visual arts. Her work pushes the boundaries of traditional craft, incorporating unconventional materials and techniques to create vibrant, expressive pieces. Parker's art has been widely exhibited, with solo shows at prestigious venues such as LaiSun Keane Gallery in Boston and The Untitled Space in New York City. Her work has also been featured in group exhibitions at the Hudson Valley Museum of Contemporary Art and the Arnot Art Museum.
In 2015, she was awarded a New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) Fellowship in Folk/Traditional Arts, recognizing her contribution to the field. This year, Parker was awarded a second NYSCA/NYFA Fellowship in Folk/Traditional Arts, further solidifying her position as a leader in the textile arts community. Her pieces have garnered critical acclaim, winning awards such as Best in Show at the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Association National Juried Show in 2019.
Parker's work has been featured in various publications, including Hyperallergic, The Boston Globe, and New York Magazine's "The Cut." She is now represented by Good Naked Gallery in Brooklyn, marking another milestone in her evolving career.
In addition to her artistic practice, Parker has served as a panel juror for the New York Foundation for the Arts and has been featured on HGTV's Uncommon Threads. Her art is held in the Northwestern Mutual Corporate Collection and numerous private collections. Currently based in Northern Westchester County, NY, Mary Tooley Parker continues to explore the intersection of craft and fine art, pushing the boundaries of textile artistry.
