뉴욕서 23인 여성작가 이색그룹전 눈길

민병갑교수 위안부역사연구 영향

뉴욕에서 강제위안부(强制慰安婦) 역사에 정통한 사회학자 민병갑 교수의 영향을 받은 전시가 마련돼 관심을 끌고 있다.

3월 여성의 달을 맞아 퀸즈대학 아트센터에서 지난 2일 개막된 'Femina Creativa: Celebrating Women in New York' 그룹전이 화제의 전시다. 4월 26일까지 계속되는 전시는 뉴욕에서 활동하고 있는 23명의 중견여성 작가들이 참여하고 있다.

스테파니 리 코디네이터는 “이번에 전시된 '한'을 비롯한 일련의 작품들은 퀸즈 칼리지 및 CUNY 대학원 사회학과 석좌 교수이자 뉴욕 퀸즈대학 재외한인연구소 소장인 민병갑 교수님의 영향을 받은 작품이다”라고 소개했다.

스테파니 리 코디네이터는 “한국 정서(情緖) 속 깊게 뿌리내린 개념으로서 말할수 없는 슬픔과 풀리지 않는 화를 복합적으로 의미하는 단어 ‘한(恨)’ 과 ‘은장도(銀粧刀)’, 끝없이 자기 꼬리를 먹으며 다시 태어남을 상징하는 ‘우로보로스(Ouroboros)’를 통해 한국 여성들이 일제 강점기 동안 겪은 고통, 특히 위안부 문제를 여실히 표현하고 있다”고 설명했다.

그는 “위안부 여성들에 대한 민병갑 석좌 교수의 오랜 연구와 역사적 사실에 영향을 받아 한국의 소녀와 여성들이 겪은 비극, 그럼에도 불구하고 살아남은 강인함에 대해 세계적으로 공감을 이끌어 낼 수 있는 시각 이미지로 표현하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

스테파니 리 코디네이터는 “작품들을 통해 위안부 문제에 대한 인식이 높아지고, 다시는 그러한 비극이 일어나지 않기를 간절히 바란다”면서 23인 여성 작가들이 서로 소통하고 응원하는 전시에 관심을 가져줄 것을 당부했다. 문의 contact@garageartcenter.org.

"In celebration of Women's History Month, the artwork 'Hahn,' exhibited at the 'Femina Creativa' group exhibition at Queens College Art Center, is influenced by Pyong Gap Min, the Distinguished Professor in the Department of Sociology at Queens College and the Graduate Center, CUNY, as well as the Director of The Research Center for the Korean Community. Rooted deeply in Korean sentiments, the piece combines the concept of 'Hahn,' symbolizing unspeakable sorrow and enduring resilience, with the visual element of the Ouroboros, a serpent eating its tail that symbolizes rebirth, along with 'Eunjangdo,' a small knife Korean women carried to protect themselves and maintain their chastity.

This artwork serves as an expression of the pain endured by Korean women, particularly the issue of comfort women, during the Japanese colonial era. Drawing inspiration from Professor Min's extensive research and historical facts, the piece portrays the tragedies experienced by Korean girls and women during that period, juxtaposed with their resilience in the face of adversity. By using a visual discourse that resonates universally, the artist aims to raise awareness about the comfort women issue, expressing a sincere hope that such tragedies will never occur again.
