한국계 풋볼스타 하인스 워드(35 피츠버그 스틸러스)가 한미친선 명예대사로 위촉(委囑)됐다.
하인스 워드는 21일 뉴욕총영사관에서 본국 정부로부터 한미친선 명예대사 임명장을 받았다. UN 총회 참석차 뉴욕을 방문 중인 김성환 외교통상부 장관은 이날 뉴욕총영사관에서 워드에게 친선대사 임명장을 전달했다.
뉴욕1 채널의 비비안 리 앵커의 사회로 진행된 이날 행사에는 민주당 문희상 의원, 한나라당 손숙미 의원, 김영목 뉴욕총영사, 존 리우 뉴욕시 감사원장 등과 동포사회 인사 입양아 가족 등이 자리했다. 또 양궁 전 국가대표 김수녕 씨와 미국 공영방송(PBC)을 통해 방영중인 ‘김치 연대기’의 세계적 요리사 조지 장의 부인인 마르자 씨가 참석해 눈길을 끌었다.
한국인 어머니와 주한미군이었던 아버지 사이에서 태어난 하인스 워드는 1살 때 미국으로 이주한 후 부모의 이혼으로 어려운 환경에서 자랐으나 어머니의 헌신적인 뒷바라지로 NFL 최고 스타중 하나로 성장했다.
4년 연속 NFL 올스타에 뽑히는 등 워드의 성공신화는 한국의 초등학교 도덕 교과서에 실리기도 했고 다문화 가정에 대한 사회적 관심이 커지는 성과로 이어졌다.
워드는 2006년 자신과 같은 혼혈 청소년들에게 꿈과 희망을 주기 위해 ‘Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation’을 설립한 바 있다. 이 재단은 5년째 매년 한국거주 다문화 가정 청소년들을 미국으로 초청해 한미 간의 우정과 포용적 세계관을 가르치고 있다.
“나를 위해 헌신적인 뒷바라지를 해주신 어머니에게 특별한 감사를 드린다”고 소감을 밝힌 하인스 워드는 “한국팬들의 성원이 큰 힘이 되고 있다. 한국과 미국 국민들의 유대를 증진시키는 가교 역할을 기꺼이 해보겠다”고 힘주어 말했다.
워드는 향후 각종 한국 관련 행사에 참석해 양국 국민 간 교류 확대를 위한 다양한 홍보 활동을 펼칠 예정이다. 한편 워드는 이날 UN 총회에서 재인준을 받는 반기문 총장과도 면담을 가졌다.

A Korean descendent football star Hines Ward has been appointed to goodwill ambassador honors by New York Consulate General in N.Y. on June 21. Seung Hwan Kim, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, has delivered the certificate to Ward.
Conducted under Vivien Leigh of NewYork 1 channel, has joined the day’s event including South Korean Politicians Hoe Sang Moon, Suk Mi Son, New York Consul General Young Mok Kim, and New York City Comptroller John Liu.
Immigrating to the U.S., at the age of 1, Ward lived through difficult environment ever after his parents’ divorce. Despite the adversity, Ward has grown to become one of the best footballers in the NFL history with his mother’s dedication.
Ward’s successful stories, such as being selected to NFL All-Star for four consecutive years, were put in South Korea's school textbooks as an example while his success helped leading the society to a growing social concern for multicultural families.
In 2006, Ward has found 'Hines Ward Helping Hands Foundation' in a purpose of giving hopes to young half-breed children around the world. For the last five years, the Foundation has invited the young children residing in Korea to U.S. annually, teaching unity and inclusive worldview to the children.
"I send special thanks to my mother who is dedicated in taking care of me to make me who I am today, Ward continued with emphasis, “Korean fans are such big support. I will work hard to bring strong bonds between Korea and the United States for the better life.”

하인스 워드는 최근 ABC-TV의 인기프로그램 ‘스타와 함께 춤을(Dancing with the Stars)’에서 화려한 춤솜씨를 과시하며 챔피언에 오르는 등 대중적 인기가 더욱 커지고 있다.
