반기문 유엔 사무총장이 카리브해의 아이티에서 축구와 농구 실력을 과시했다.
반기문 총장은 지난 15일 아이티 수도 포르토프랭스를 방문, ‘희망 스포츠센터(Sports for Hope Centre)에서 범상치 않은 운동신경을 뽐냈다. 희망스포츠센터는 IOC(국제올림픽위원회)의 지원으로 준공한 스포츠시설로 반총장의 방문은 지난달 IOC 토마스 바흐 위원장과 평화 증진과 건강 보호, 지속 가능한 개발 목표를 위해 힘을 합치기로 파트너십을 맺은데 따른 것이다.
이날 반총장은 바흐 위원장과 함께 축구공을 다루는 기량(技倆) 대결(?)을 펼쳐 눈길을 끌었다. 독일 출신인 바흐 위원장은 2014 브라질월드컵에서 우승한 독일의 명성에 누가 되지 않게 능숙한 기술을 과시했고 반총장도 그에 못지 않은 실력으로 박수를 받았다.
반총장은 농구 코트에서도 망설이지 않고 공을 잡고 멋진 원핸드 슛을 성공시켜 현장의 카메라 기자들을 바쁘게 했다.
2010년 대지진의 여파가 아직도 가시지 않은 카리브해의 최빈국 아이티는 2012런던올림픽에 단 한명의 본국선수가 출전할만큼 스포츠인프라가 크게 열악(劣惡)한 상황이다. 아이티 정부가 제공한 부지에 1800만달러를 들여 조성한 희망스포츠센터는 2500명 규모의 실내경기장과 운동장, 코트 등 14개 스포츠 시설을 구비(具備)하고 있다.
한편 반기문 총장은 지난 수년간 아이티 국민들이 콜레라로 고통을 받는 것과 관련, 보건환경 개선 등 콜레라 퇴치를 위한 새로운 지원을 다짐했다.
반 총장은 유순택여사와 함께 로스팔마스의 한 마을을 찾아 콜레라로 가족을 잃은 주민들을 위로하고 “사무총장으로서 콜레라가 최대한 빠른 시일안에 퇴치(退治)될 수 있도록 유엔과 회원국들이 노력을 기울이겠다”고 약속했다.
2010년 1월 최악의 지진으로 22만명이 사망한 아이티에서는 그해 10월이후 확산(擴散)된 콜레라로 70만3천명의 환자가 발생했고 8500여명이 숨졌다.
그러나 위생환경을 높이고 주민들의 건강체크 등 유엔의 지원이 강화되면서 올해 상반기 5개월간 발병률이 전년 대비 74% 감소한 것으로 나타났다.

Ban praises Haitian police recruits, judicial institutions in strengthening rule of law
Calling them “the backbone” of Haiti, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon today praised national police recruits and the efforts under way to strengthen the rule of law in the country, as he continued his visit to the Caribbean nation.
“As I am standing here before so many cadets and police officers, senior police officers, I feel as if I am seeing the brighter future of Haiti,” Mr. Ban said in remarks to the Police Academy and School in Port-au-Prince.
More than 1,000 cadets have graduated, including 100 women, Mr. Ban said, adding that “they give us hope that Haiti is moving in the right direction.”
The UN chief recalled that when he started in his position in 2007, Haiti was “full of chaotic situations” and the city of Cite-Soleil was “full of gangs and people weren’t able to walk around safely.”
With effective intervention from the UN Stabilization Mission in the country (MINUSTAH), the Haitian National Police “were able to restore security,” he added.
Haiti hopes to have 15,000 police officers working by the end of 2016. MINUSTAH, meanwhile, is reconfiguring the Mission to significantly reduce its military footprint in the country.
“The Haitian State will have to show the people that it can enforce the law and demonstrate that in a democratic nation, no one – including political authorities and the police themselves – is above the law,” Mr. Ban said, having earlier in the day visited some of the country’s judicial institutions.
Also today, Mr. Ban met with the Presidents of the National Assembly and the Chamber of Deputies.
Earlier, he toured the “Sports for Hope Centre” with President Michel Martelly and the President of the International Olympic Committee, Thomas Bach.
A “welcome addition to the Haitian landscape,” Mr. Ban said the Centre will provide athletes with high-level training conditions, and enable National Federations to improve the level of elite sport in the country.
“Youth will have a place to acquire skills and self-confidence that will benefit themselves and their communities,” Mr. Ban said, noting that young people, as well as schools and communities are the key beneficiaries of the new structure.

The groundbreaking for the Centre was held in 2012. At the time, Haiti was still immersed in a major humanitarian crisis triggered by a massive quake that struck on 12 January 2010, killing at least 220,000 people and leaving 1.5 million others homeless.
After arriving in Haiti yesterday, Mr. Ban met with MINUSTAH staff, and laid a wreath in memory of the 102 UN staff killed in the earthquake.
