뉴욕의 통근열차가 21명의 사상자가 발생한 참사이후 맨 앞 객차에 승객들이 거의 타지 않고 있다고 데일리뉴스가 전했다.
데일리뉴스는 뉴욕 메트로노스 할렘라인 열차가 5일 운행이 재개(再開)됐으나 승객들이 불안감 때문에 앞 객차에 사람들을 거의 볼 수 없었다고 전했다.
지난 3일 바할라 커머스 스트리트 건널목에서 열차가 벤츠 SUV 차량과 충돌해 운전자와 열차 맨 앞차에 탄 승객 5명이 숨졌다.
신문은 이날 오전 11시47분 그랜드센트럴 터미널을 출발한 열차의 맨 앞 객차 모습을 촬영한 사진과 함께 “러시아워 시간은 아니지만 평소와 달리 맨 앞 객차에 탑승하려는 사람들이 거의 없었다”고 전했다.
이날 맨 앞 객차에 유일하게 앉아 있던 제이콥 머조라도(26)는 “열차를 자주 타지 않아 별 생각없이 앞칸에 앉았다”면서 “사람들이 이쪽으로 오지 않아 궁금했다”고 말했다.
열차 승무원 RJ 스나이더는 “승객들이 이틀전 사고의 충격때문인지 (맨 앞차에 타는 것을) 불안해하는 것 같다”고 말했다.

Metro-North’s Harlem Line riders leave first car empty after catastrophic wreck
There were lots of empty seats on the 11:47 a.m. out of Grand Central on Metro-North’s Harlem Line.
Thirty-eight hours after a catastrophic wreck on this line that left five riders dead, nervous commuters returned to the rails Thursday.
Because this wasn’t rush hour, the first car where the five fatalities were sitting Tuesday was unoccupied.
Not that regular riders like 26-year-old Jacob Mejorado would consider riding up front.
“I was wondering if anyone was going to sit in the first car,” he said.
Another commuter, Michael Dittelman, insisted he had no qualms about sitting in the front car. “It’s like lightning striking twice,” he said.
Conductor R.J. Snyder said the riders he spoke with did not seem all that apprehensive. “Everyone keeps telling me what a good job we did getting the trains running again,” he said.
The ride north was quieter than usual but uneventful. But as the train neared the crossing in Valhalla, N.Y. where the crash happened, some of the passengers stared out the windows at the investigators still on the scene.
And there was an eerie silence that seemed to magnify the sounds of the train wheels going around and around.
