‘올해의 보이스오브뉴욕’ 함지하기자 수상

 

뉴욕의 한인언론인이 '올해의 보이스 오브 뉴욕(Voices of NY)' 수상자로 선정(選定)돼 관심을 끌고 있다.

 

제13회 이피스 어워드(Ippies Award)에서 뉴욕한국일보 함지하(32) 기자가 한인언론인으로는 첫 수상의 기쁨을 차지했다. '이피스 어워드'는 뉴욕의 소수계 및 독립언론사를 대상으로 지난 2003년 뉴욕의 독립소수계언론협회가 창설했으며 2012년부터 뉴욕시립대(CUNY) 저널리즘스쿨이 주관하고 있다. 보이스오브뉴욕은 소수계독립매체의 주요 기사들을 영어로 번역 발행하는 유일한 미디어이다.

 

11일 시상식엔 멜리사 마크-비버리토 뉴욕시의회 의장과 새라 바틀렛 뉴욕시립대 저널리즘스쿨 학장, 캐런 페나 '보이스오브뉴욕' 편집장 및 수상자들이 참석한 가운데 열렸다. 수상자는 최고 영예인 올해의 보이스오브뉴욕을 비롯, 탐사보도상(쥬이시 데일리), 이민사회취재상(시노비전) 사회이슈상(롱아일랜드 프레스) 논평상(싱타오 데일리) 등 11개 부문 31명이다.

 

 

 

기조연설을 맡은 멜리사 마크-비버리토 시의장은 "뉴욕의 중요한 축을 이루는 다양한 이민사회를 하나의 끈으로 묶는 보이스오브뉴욕의 역할은 무엇보다 중요하다"고 평가하고 수상자들에게 아낌없는 축하를 보냈다.

시상자로 나선 보이스오브뉴욕의 캐런 페나 편집장은 "플러싱 맥도날드에서의 한인 노인 분쟁사태를 최초 보도하는 등 다양한 커뮤니티 이슈에 대한 탁월한 보도 능력을 인정해 함지하 기자를 수상자로 선정했다"고 밝혔다.

함지하기자는 지난해 뉴욕타임스가 대서특필해 화제를 모은 맥도날드 한인노인축출사건 등 굵직굵직한 특종기사를 다수 보도한 주인공이다. 2012년 뉴욕한국일보에 입사한 그는 특히 제휴(提携) 관계인 뉴욕타임스와 합동취재는 물론, 그 자신의 이름으로 된 기명 기사를 여러 차례 실어 눈길을 끌었다.

 

2013년 링거주사를 맞았다가 사지를 절단한 한인여성의 충격적인 뉴스와 올해 후속보도가 뉴욕타임스에 게재됐고 최근 타임스가 13개월에 걸쳐 탐사보도한 뉴욕네일업계 심층보도 또한 긴밀한 공조활동을 벌였다. 타임스는 함지하기자와의 인터뷰를 통해 취재 뒷이야기를 전하기도 했다.

 

또 지난해 한국방문중 세월호 참사가 발생했을 때는 뉴욕타임스 최상훈 서울특파원과 팽목항과 안산에서 일주일간 이원취재 활동을 벌이기도 했다. 뉴욕한국일보 사회부 소속이면서 세계 최고의 권위지인 뉴욕타임스 객원기자로 활약하는 보기드문 케이스인 셈이다.

 

 

 

근래 한인사회의 위상이 강화되고 있지만 뉴욕타임스가 한인사회와 관련한 뉴스들을 비중있게 싣는 사례들이 늘어나는 것도 함지하기자와 같은 한인언론인들의 맹활약이 큰 역할을 하고 있다.

 

함승용 이은희씨의 외아들인 그는 유학을 와서 언론과 인연을 맺었다. 지난 1999년 캐나다 온타리오 헌츠빌 고등학교에 유학온 그는 2002년 유타대에 입학, 신문방송학을 전공했다. 재학중 현지신문사에 근무하며 한국 언론에 기사를 기고(寄稿)하는 등 실무경험을 쌓았고 2012년 뉴욕한국일보에 입사, 사회부 소속으로 현장을 뛰고 있다.

 

타고난 취재열정과 감각은 집안내력이기도 하다. 아버지 함승용씨는 매일경제에서 정치 사회 경제부를 두루 거치고 MBN 증권부장을 역임한 정통 언론인이다. 한때는 기자가 되려는 아들을 만류하기도 했지만 충분히 제 몫을 하는 것을 보며 현역 시절 경험을 들려주는 등 힘을 실어주었다.

 

안타깝게도 병중에 있던 아버지를 여읜 것은 지난 9일이었다. 서울대병원 영안실에서 수상소식을 접한 그는 발인(發靷)직후 뉴욕에 돌아와 시상식에 참석할 수 있었다. 함지하 기자는 "임종(臨終)을 앞두고도 격려해주신 아버지께 좋은 선물이 된 것 같다. 하늘에서도 흐뭇한 미소를 지으셨을 것"이라고 전했다.

About Voices of NY 

 

In the days following the September 11th attacks, when Muslim communities felt their perspective was invisible, an association of the independent and ethnic press founded “Voices That Must Be Heard.” It is one of only a handful of online publications in the country — and the only one in the New York region – that serves as a bridge between mainstream society and immigrant communities and communities of color.

 

In the spring of 2011, the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism assumed ownership of the site from the New York Community Media Alliance, and redesigned and re-launched the publication as “Voices of NY.” The site curates the best journalistic work being produced by scores of community and ethnic publications and where necessary translates the work into English. The audience for “Voices” includes mainstream and immigrant journalists, advocacy groups, city and government agencies, students, and individuals seeking a broader perspective on the news. As a testament to its global reach, “Voices” content is viewed through browsers from 134 countries.

 

Under the Journalism School’s direction, “Voices” will commission more original content. Our role as a central clearinghouse for news will also make it easier for us to spot trends that transcend communities. We will use that position to initiate citywide coverage of emerging issues, as well as promote cross-publication coverage in response to breaking news. We expect “Voices” to evolve into a newswire service that enables the region’s small, independent publications to exchange content, whether it be text, audio, video or photographs.

The Ippies are considered a benchmark of journalistic excellence and are a coveted prize for the publishers, editors, and reporters in New York City’s ethnic and community press.
