‘바비큐에 파도타기’ 크리스마스 진풍경

 

공원에선 바비큐 파티를, 해변에선 파도를 타고.

 

'8월의 크리스마스'가 뉴욕에서 현실이 되었다.

 

올해의 크리스마스 선물은 '엘니뇨'라는 농담(弄談)이 오갈만큼 뉴욕 등 미동북부 주민들이 평생 다시 없을 특별한 크리스마스를 누렸다.

 

맨해튼 센트럴파크는 25일 0시30분 화씨 66도(섭씨 18.9도)를 기록, 1982년 이전 최고기록인 64도를 33년만에 깨뜨렸다.

 

이날 휴일을 맞아 시민들은 여름옷 차림으로 조깅을 하거나 공원과 뒷마당에서 바비큐를 즐기고 해변에선 파도를 타기도 했다.

 

뉴욕의 바비큐 시즌은 5월말 메모리얼 데이에 시작돼 늦어도 10월초 콜럼버스데이에 끝나지만 사상 유례없는 따뜻한 겨울이 계속되면서 크리스마스 트리앞에서 바비큐를 하는 진풍경(珍風景)이 연출됐다.

 

 

 

뉴욕 포스트는 이날 신문 프런트면에 '호호 더워라(Ho Ho Hot)'는 제목과 함께 상반신을 벗은 산타클로스 사진을 실어 눈길을 끌었다.

 

뉴욕시는 전날 72도(22.2도)까지 치솟아 1996년 63도 기록을 가볍게 경신했다. 이날 기온은 지난 7월4일 독립기념일의 75도보다 불과 3도 낮은 것이었다.

 

브루클린 브리지 파크에서 반팔 티셔츠에 반바지를 입고 쉬던 메그 로들링은 ABC방송과의 인터뷰에서 "지구온난화라고 하지만 정말 놀랍다"고 신기하다는 표정을 지었다.

 

계절을 잊은 봄꽃들이 다시 꽃망울을 터뜨리는 가운데 초대형 크리스마스 트리가 있는 록펠러센터 앞 아이스 링크에서는 반팔차림으로 스케이팅을 즐겼고 더위를 식히려는 사람들이 프로즌요거트 가게에 길게 줄지어 서있기도 했다.

 

캐나다 접경지대인 버팔로와 로체스터 등 뉴욕주 북부도 60도대를 보이는 등 전 도시에서 새로운 기록이 수립된 대단한 하루였다.

 

뉴욕시는 12월에 단 한차례도 영하(零下)로 내려간 적이 없을만큼 기상 관측이래 초유의 따뜻한 겨울을 나고 있다.

 

뉴욕주 오렌지카운티의 한 60대 주민은 "크리스마스를 맞아 가족들과 함께 백야드에서 바비큐를 하며 즐거운 시간을 보냈다. 내 평생 이렇게 따뜻한 12월은 처음이다"라고 놀라워했다.

Another Record-Breaker! Warmest Christmas Day Ever for New York City <NBC-TV>

 

Christmas Day saw record-breaking temperatures for the tri-state area, as the mercury crept to a balmy 66 degrees shortly after midnight Friday, eclipsing the 33-year-old record by two degrees.

 

Revelers flocked to the Rockefeller Center tree as the sun rose Friday, donning nothing more than light jackets, if any. It was the second day of record-breaking temperatures; the mercury hit 72 on Christmas Eve, shattering the previous record of 63 degrees set in 1996.

 

 

 

The warm weather Friday was accompanied by dense fog. Much of Christmas Day was dry, but Storm Team 4 expected wet weather to roll into the region Christmas night.

 

Rain is likely again Saturday into Saturday night ahead of the next storm system, and temperatures Saturday are expected to be more seasonable, lingering in the low 50s.

 

The climate is expected to change once again Sunday, when another day of record warmth is likely, with temperatures expected to reach 66 degrees.

 

The seesaw pattern appears likely to calm down early next week, according to Storm Team 4. Temperatures are expected to top out at 45 degrees Monday, and then climb no higher than the low 50s Tuesday through Thursday.

 

Thus far, this New York City December has been 13.1 degrees above normal and is on pace to be the warmest December ever in the city, according to Storm Team 4. The average temperature this month has been 51.6 degrees. The current record is 44.1 degrees for the month set in 2001.

 

The record-warm December would follow up a record-warm November for New York City.
