뉴욕 라커펠러 X마스 트리 화려한 점등식

 

샌버나디노 총기참사에 따른 테러불안속에 뉴욕 맨해튼에서 연중 최대 행사의 하나인 라커펠러(Rockefeller) 크리스마스 트리 점등식(點燈式)이 2일 밤 펼쳐졌다.

 

연말 홀리데이 시즌의 시작을 알리는 라커펠러 크리스마스 트리 점등식은 올해가 83회째로 수십m 높이의 초대형 트리에 장식된 수만개의 전구를 밝히는 것으로 해마다 수많은 시민과 관광객들이 발걸음을 하고 있다.

 

올해 크리스마스 트리는 뉴욕주 가디너에서 베어온 것으로 78피트(약 23.5.m) 독일가문비 나무로 알려졌다. 무려 4만5,000개의 LED 전구들과 꼭대기에 9피트 규모의 스와로브스키 별로 장식된 크리스마스 트리는 내년 1월 7일까지 불을 밝힐 예정이다.

 

 

 

이날 행사장 무대에선 오후 7시부터 두시간동안 NBC-TV의 생중계속에 스과, 메리 J. 블라이지, 제임스 테일러, 안드레아 보첼리 등 유명 팝가수와 클래식 가수들이 나와 노래를 선사하고 크리스마스 스펙타큘러 공연단으로 유명한 더 로케츠의 댄서 12명의 멋진 춤도 펼쳐졌다.

 

 

 

록펠러센터가 위치한 맨해튼 48-50가와 5-6 애버뉴 일대는 오후부터 사람들이 몰려든데다 뉴욕경찰국(NYPD)이 거리 곳곳에서 바리케이드를 치는 등 삼엄(森嚴)한 치안유지로 거리를 걷기가 어려울 정도였다.

 

특히 행사장에선 빗줄기가 비치는 날씨였지만 혹시라도 있을 테러 위협을 제거하기 위해 시민들이 들고 있던 우산을 모두 한곳에 모아놓기도 했다.

 

 

 

NYPD측은 "경찰의 특별 비상체제는 12월 31일 자정 타임스스퀘어서 진행되는 '새해맞이 크리스틸볼드랍 행사 등 홀리데이 시즌이 끝날 때까지 이어질 것"이라고 말했다.

 

행사에 참석한 박진호 씨는 "경찰의 통제로 분위기가 너무 삼엄하고 불편함도 있었지만 캐롤도 울려퍼지고 시민들이 즐기는 모습을 보니 연말의 행복함이 보인다"고 말했다.

83rd Rockefeller Center Tree Lighting 2015

 

The 2015 tree was lit for the first time on Wednesday, December 2 at Rockefeller Plaza. The tree will remain lit and on display on the plaza between West 48th and 51st Streets and Fifth and Sixth Avenues, until 8pm on January 6. Each year tens of thousands crowd the sidewalks for the event and millions watch the live broadcast.

 

 

Habitat for Humanity (A Gift that Keeps On Giving)

 

For the ninth consecutive year, the 2015 Christmas Tree will be donated to Habitat for Humanity. Once the holidays have passed and crowds have dispersed, the tree comes down and is milled, treated and made into lumber that is used for home building. Each year, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree continues to be a symbol of hope, and inspired the children’s book, “The Carpenter’s Gift,” written by David Rubel and illustrated by Jim LaMarche in collaboration with Habitat for Humanity.

 

 

Tree Lighting History

 

For over seven decades, the Christmas Tree at Rockefeller Center and the holiday decorations adorning and surrounding have stood as a holiday beacon for New Yorkers and visitors alike. From the beginning, the Tree was a gathering place and reflection of what was happening in the world around it. Even before the first formal tree went up, workers lined up beneath a Christmas tree on the Rockefeller Plaza construction site to collect their paychecks during the height of the Great Depression. People from around the world came after September 11th to see the Tree decorated in a patriotic red, white and blue. Today, more than half a million people pass by the Tree very day, making Rockefeller Center the epicenter of New York City’s holiday celebrations.
