뉴욕의 한인경찰이 길을 잃고 헤매던 장애아(障礙兒)를 가족에게 무사히 인도해 훈훈한 화제가 되고 있다.
뉴욕 경찰(NYPD)은 25일 111경찰서 소속 한인경관 대니얼 김이 한 공원 인근에서 언어소통이 되지 않는 장애아를 발견하고 여러 시간의 노력 끝에 가족에 무사히 인계했다고 밝혔다.
대니얼 김 경관은 이날 신원미상의 어린이가 거리를 배회(徘徊)하고 있다는 신고를 받고 출동해 퀸즈 리틀넥 PS 94 초등학교 근처 공원에서 남자 어린이를 발견했다.
김 경관은 자폐증을 앓고 있어 이름 조차 알 수 없었던 어린이를 경찰 차에 태워 종이 비행기를 접어주는 등 안심시킨 후 가족을 찾아 나섰다. 이웃들을 일일이 방문하던 그는 마침내 1 km 떨어진 쇼핑센터에서 이 어린이의 삼촌 부부를 찾을 수 있었다.
조카가 사라진 것을 뒤늦게 알고 애태우던 이 보호자는 김 경관 등이 조카를 보살펴주고 무사히 데려다주어 너무나 감사한다는 말을 전했다.

NYPD helps reconnect lost autistic child to his family
On 4/25/2016 received a 911 call from a public school custodian stating that there was a child running around the neighborhood alone. When we responded to the job he was found alone in a fenced park of public school 94. When we arrived we realized the child was autistic and not able to communicate. There was no sign of parents or guardians. Concerned for his well-being we walked with him into our police vehicle so that we can search and bring him to his care-takers. We were able to bring him inside our police vehicle and drive around the neighborhood to look for his family. While searching for his family while inside the police vehicle, PO Daniel Kim made him a paper plane. We were able to find his worried uncle at a local shopping center about a 1/4 to 1/2 mile away from the park. His uncle was extremely thankful to the NYPD and happy to reconnect with his nephew.
