美25세여성 65m 높이 허드슨강 다리 투신 생환

뉴저지의 25세 여성이 높이가 212피트(65m)에 달하는 조지 워싱턴 브리지에서 허드슨강에 뛰어내렸으나 발만 다친 채 구조됐다고 데일리뉴스가 3일(이하 현지시간) 보도했다.

데일리뉴스는 2일 오후 5시 경 2층으로 된 조지워싱턴 브리지 상부 교량에서 신원 미상의 이 여성이 점프한 후 허드슨강을 헤엄치고 있는 것을 5시7분경 인근에 있던 구조보트가 끄집어냈다고 전했다.

발에 부상을 입은 이 여성은 구조 직후 맨해튼의 세인트 루크 호스피탈에 후송(後送)됐다. 투신 이유는 알려지지 않은 가운데 경찰은 이 여성의 차량을 맨해튼의 포트 워싱턴 애버뉴에서 발견했다고 밝혔다.

조지워싱턴 브리지에서 투신자살을 시도하거나 모험삼아 뛰어내리는 일은 종종 발생하지만 생환은 드문 일이다. 다리가 워낙 높아 강물에 부딛칠 때의 충격이 크기 때문이다.

지난 2009년엔 매사추세츠 출신의 미해군사관학교 수구팀 선수 애드리안 론(당시 29세)이 조지 워싱턴 브리지의 하부 교량에서 뛰어내린 후 강변까지 헤엄쳐 온 적이 있다.

1931년 완공된 조지워싱턴 브리지는 뉴욕 맨해튼과 뉴저지 포트리를 잇는 상하교로 된 다리로 연간 통행 차량이 1억600만대에 이르는 세계에서 가장 교통량이 많은 다리이다.

강물을 배경으로 한 아름다운 맨해튼 전경덕분에 평소 많은 시민들과 자전거족들이 통행이 허가된 2층 다리 인도를 이용하고 있으며, 투신자살 사건도 이따금 발생하고 있다.

The George Washington Bridge – known informally as the GW Bridge, the GWB, the GW, or the George – is a double-decked suspension bridge spanning the Hudson River between the Washington Heights neighborhood in the borough of Manhattan in New York City and Fort Lee, New Jersey. The bridge's upper level also carries pedestrian and bicycle traffic. Interstate 95 (I-95) and U.S. Route 1/9 (US 1/9) cross the river via the bridge. The New Jersey Turnpike (part of I-95, connecting to I-80) and US 46, which lie entirely within New Jersey, both terminate halfway across the bridge at the state border with New York. At its eastern terminus in New York City, the bridge connects with the Trans-Manhattan Expressway (part of I-95, connecting to the Cross Bronx Expressway).
