맨해튼 첼시 SIA갤러리 조각전 눈길

첼시의 SIA NY 갤러리에서 지난 20일부터 2월2일까지 김희경 최태훈 김병진 손종진 소현우 등 5인작가 초대전을 열고 있다.

세계미술의 중심 맨해튼 첼시에는 수많은 갤러리가 존재하고 매주 목요일에는 동시다발적(同時多發的)으로 오프닝이 이뤄지고 미술애호가들은 좋은 작가의 수준높은 전시를 감상하느라 즐거운 발품을 판다.

하지만 요즘 첼시에서 좋은 조각전을 찾아보기가 쉽지 않다. 대부분의 갤러리들이 페인팅에 집중을 하여 전시를 진행하고 기획을 하기 때문이다.

그런 점에서 한인 화랑인 SIA NY의 조각전은 충분히 시선을 끄는 전시회이다. SIA NY 갤러리측은 이번 전시에 초대된 주인공들이 엄격한 심사를 통해 선정한 최고의 한국조각가들이라고 소개하고 있다.

이가람 큐레이터는 "SIA NY의 미션인 열정과 정신에 부합(附合)하는 도전적인 전시를 첼시에서 선보이게 돼 기쁘다"면서 "세계 현대미술의 중심 뉴욕에서 조각의 장르를 재조명하는 동시에 한국 최고의 조각가 5명의 작품을 소개하는 흔치 않는 전시가 될 것"이라고 말했다.

전시 오프닝 리셉션은 28일 오후 6시에 열린다.

Chelsea, Manhattan

Chelsea is a neighborhood on the West Side of the borough of Manhattan in New York City. The district's boundaries are roughly 14th Street to the south and the Hudson River and West Street to the west, with the northern boundary variously described as 30th Street or 34th Street, and the eastern boundary as either Sixth Avenue or Fifth Avenue. Chelsea is divided between Manhattan Community Board 4 and Manhattan Community Board 5. It contains the Chelsea Historic District and its extension, which were designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission in 1970 and 1981. respectively, The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1977, and expanded in 1982 to include contiguous blocks containing particularly significant examples of period architecture.

The neighborhood is primarily residential, with a mix of tenements, apartment blocks, city housing projects, townhouses, and renovated rowhouses, but its many retail businesses reflect the ethnic and social diversity of the population. The area has a large gay population. Chelsea is also known as one of the centers of the city's art world, with over 200 galleries in the neighborhood. However, as of 2015, there is a widening income gap between the wealthy living in luxury buildings and the poor living in housing projects, who are, at times, across the street from each other.
