공화당 유력주자 도날드 트럼프가 고향 뉴욕에서 수천명 시위대와 맞닥뜨리는 곤욕을 치렀다.
반 트럼프 시위대는 19일 맨해튼 중심가 트럼프 인터내셔널 타워 주변까지 행진하며 "엿같은 트럼프", "도날드 트럼프는 꺼져라", "트럼프는 증오다"라는 구호를 외쳤다.
경찰은 이들이 센트럴 파크를 통과한 후 복잡한 거리로 넘어오는 것을 막기 위해 바리케이드를 쳤고 최루액(催淚液)도 뿌리는 등 뉴욕에선 보기 드물게 데모대를 강경 진압하는 모습을 보였다.
이 과정에서 57가와 5애버뉴에 있는 트럼프 타워 앞까지 진입한 시위대 일부가 수갑이 채워진 채 경찰에 연행됐다.
이번 시위는 친이민단체인 코스모폴리탄반파시스트 그룹이 주도한 것이다. 그중 하나인 뉴욕아랍미국협회 소속 시민운동가 린다 사수어 사무총장은 "무슬림 이민자들의 미국 입국 금지를 공공연히 주장한 허풍쟁이 억만장자가 반 이슬람 분위기를 더욱 조장하는 것이 공포스럽다"고 말했다.
그녀는 "트럼프는 선동정치가이고 반이민주의자이자 반 무슬림 성차별주의자다. 그는 우리의 모든 것을 반대하고 있다. 그가 대변하는 모두 것이 두렵다"고 말했다.
지난 주 시카고에서 트럼프의 집회가 반대시위로 집회가 무산(霧散) 된 이래 18일 애리조나 피닉스에서 트럼프 유세를 방해하는 시위가 벌어지고 19일 뉴욕의 도심에서마저 대규모 시위가 펼쳐짐에 따라 반 트럼프 시위의 물결은 확산될 조짐을 보이고 있다.
국제사회주의기구의 소피아 아리아스는 "시카고에서처럼 우리는 트럼프는 안된다라는 말을 분명히 해야 한다. 위스콘신에서는 영어를 못한다는 이유로 프에로토리코 가족이 살해됐다. 이 모두가 트럼프와 그의 지지자들이 만든 분위기때문이다"라고 강조했다.
이번 시위로 맨해튼 일대 차량이 수km에 걸쳐 밀리는 등 극심한 교통체증 현상을 빚었다. '트럼프 저택에 장벽을 쌓아라' 는 등의 배너를 내건 시위대로 인해 한시간 늦게 연단에 오른 트럼프는 "우리는 다시 한번 승리할 것"이라고 호언하며 미국과 멕시코의 국경에 장벽을 세우겠다는 공약을 되풀이했다.

Mar-a-Lago (English pronunciation: /mɑɹ.ə.lɑ.goʊ/) is a landmark estate in Palm Beach, Florida. Built from 1924 to 1927 by Marjorie Merriweather Post, the estate is currently owned by The Trump Organization, LLC.
The 126-room, 110,000-square-foot (10,219 m²) house is also the headquarters of the the Mar-a-Lago Club.
Marjorie Merriweather Post built the house with her then-husband Edward F. Hutton. Post hired Marion Sims Wyeth to design the house, and Joseph Urban to create interior design and exterior decorations for the house. Upon her death in 1973, Post willed the 17-acre (69,000 m2) estate to the U.S. Government as a retreat for Presidents and visiting foreign dignitaries. However, the mansion was not used for this purpose prior to being declared a National Historic Landmark in 1980.
Mar-a-Lago has frequently hosted the International Red Cross Ball, an annual white tie, tails, and tiara ball. Founded by Post, it has a history of attracting wealthy socialites and ambassadors from across the world in support of the mission of the American Red Cross.
Donald Trump paid $10 million for the estate in 1985. After acquiring the property, Trump had the property renovated, with 58 bedrooms, 33 bathrooms, a 29-foot (8.8 m)-long pietra dura marble top dining table, 12 fireplaces, and three bomb shelters. The home also has five clay and one grass tennis court with a waterfront pool. Further additions have been made since then, including a 20,000-square-foot (1,900 m2) ballroom.
In 1994, Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley spent their honeymoon at Mar-a-Lago.
