오죽하면 조지 W. 부시도 나설까.
조지 W 부시(71) 전 대통령이 같은 공화당 소속이자 동갑내기인 도널드 트럼프 대통령을 비판(批判)하고 나섰다.
부시 전 대통령은 지난 27일(현지시간) 피플지와의 인터뷰에서 “난 인종차별주의가 싫다. 남을 욕하는 것(name-calling)도 싫다. 사람들이 소외감(疎外感)을 느끼게 하는 것도 싫다”며 트럼프를 지목했다.
그는 하지만 “누구도 이렇게 하는것을 좋아하지 않는다. 우리는 전에도 이러한 것을 겪었다. 우리는 항상 그것에서 길을 찾아왔기 때문에 어느 정도 낙관하고 있다”고 희망을 버리지 않았다.
부시 전 대통령은 트럼프에 대해서 아직 취임후 40일에 불과하다는 점을 들어 좀더 지켜볼 것을 주문했다. 그는 “선거운동을 하다가도 막상 백악관에 들어가면 달라지게 된다. 대통령이라는 자리는 현실이기 때문이다. 이제 그렇게 될 것이다”라고 덧붙였다.
이에 앞서 부시 전 대통령은 NBC의 투데이 쇼에 출연해 “나 같은 사람들에게 책임을 묻기 위해 언론이 필요하다. 언론은 민주주의에서 필수불가결한 것”이라고 강조했다.
그의 발언은 뉴욕타임스와 CNN, NBC 등 주류 언론을 ‘가짜 뉴스(fake news)’라고 비방하고 있는 트럼프 대통령을 정면으로 겨냥한 것이다.
“권력은 굉장히 중독적일 수 있고 부패하기 쉽다”고 경고한 그는 대선 기간 중 트럼프 대통령 캠프와 러시아 정부와의 관계에 대한 조사에 대해 “우리는 정답이 필요하다”고 밝혔다.
이어 트럼프 정부의 반이민 정책에 대해 “우리 자유의 기반은 자유롭게 기도할 권리에 있다. 나는 법을 옹호하는 이민 정책에 찬성한다”고 힘주어 말했다.
