" 우리는 할 수 있습니다. (Yes We Can)"
20일 정오(이하 미동부시간)를 기해 대통령직에서 내려오는 버락 오바마가 국민들에게 대통령으로서 마지막 편지를 보냈다.
오바마 대통령은 19일 공개서한에서 “백악관 집무실에서 국민 여러분께 작별 편지를 보내는 것은 오랜 전통입니다. 그것은 우리가 알고 배운 것, 작은 지혜가 차기 대통령으로 하여금 우리나라와 자유세계의 최고 지도자로서 위대한 책임을 갖도록 하는데 도움이 될 수 있기 때문입니다”라고 운을 떼었다.
오바마 대통령은 “저는 44대 대통령의 직무를 명예롭게 할 수 있게 해주신 것에 대해 여러분께 마지막 감사를 드리고자 합니다. 저의 임기 동안 제가 배운 모든 것은 여러분에게서 비롯된 것이며, 여러분은 저를 더 나은 대통령, 더 나은 사람으로 만들었습니다”라고 머리를 낮추었다.
이어 “지난 8년간 여러분은 선함(goodness)과 회복(resilience), 제가 힘을 얻은 희망의 원천이었습니다. 저는 우리 생애 최악의 경제위기속에서 서로를 보듬어주는 이웃과 사회를 보았습니다. (총격사건이 벌어진) 찰스턴 교회에서 비탄에 빠진 가족들을 위로하며 해답을 찾고 은총을 받는 것을 보았습니다”라고 말했다.
그는 “젊은 학생들과 군인들의 희망의 용기를 얻었고 우리의 과학자들이 마비된 환자에게 신경을 살려주고 죽음을 생각한 부상군인들이 다시 걷도록 해주는 것을 보았습니다. 또한 어린이들이 난민을 돌보고 평화를 위해 일하고, 무엇보다 서로를 지켜야 하는 우리의 의무를 상기시키는 것을 보았습니다”고 이어나갔다.
오바마 대통령은 “저는 미국 국민 모두에게서 품위(decency)와 결단력(determination) 쾌활함(good humor)과 친절함(kindness)을 보았습니다. 시민으로 여러분의 일상적인 행동에서 나는 우리의 미래가 펼쳐지는 것을 보았습니다”라고 찬사를 보냈다.
그는 “우리 모두는 정당과 상관없이 시민으로서 할 일을 하기 위해 노력해야 합니다. 선거가 있을 때나 작은 이익에 급급할 때만이 아니라 우리의 모든 인생에 걸쳐 그렇게 해야 합니다”고 강조했다.
오바마 대통령은 “저는 여러분이 걷는 모든 순간마다 함께 있을 것입니다. 진보의 포물선(arc of progress)이 느리게 보일 때면 미국은 어떤 한 사람의 과제가 아니며, 우리의 민주주의에서 가장 강력한 단 하나의 단어는 '우리', '우리 국민', '우리는 극복할 것이다'라는 것을 기억해주시기 바랍니다”라고 거듭 당부했다.
오바마 대통령은 끝으로 2008년 대선 슬로건이었던 ‘우리는 할 수 있다’는 구호로 희망을 띄우며 대국민 감사 메시지를 마무리했다.
“맞습니다. 우리는 할 수 있습니다.(Yes, we can.)”

My fellow Americans,
It's a long-standing tradition for the sitting president of the United States to leave a parting letter in the Oval Office for the American elected to take his or her place. It's a letter meant to share what we know, what we've learned, and what small wisdom may help our successor bear the great responsibility that comes with the highest office in our land, and the leadership of the free world.
But before I leave my note for our 45th president, I wanted to say one final thank you for the honor of serving as your 44th. Because all that I've learned in my time in office, I've learned from you. You made me a better President, and you made me a better man.
Throughout these eight years, you have been the source of goodness, resilience, and hope from which I've pulled strength. I've seen neighbors and communities take care of each other during the worst economic crisis of our lifetimes. I have mourned with grieving families searching for answers -- and found grace in a Charleston church.
I've taken heart from the hope of young graduates and our newest military officers. I've seen our scientists help a paralyzed man regain his sense of touch, and wounded warriors once given up for dead walk again. I've seen Americans whose lives have been saved because they finally have access to medical care, and families whose lives have been changed because their marriages are recognized as equal to our own. I've seen the youngest of children remind us through their actions and through their generosity of our obligations to care for refugees, or work for peace, and, above all, to look out for each other.
I've seen you, the American people, in all your decency, determination, good humor, and kindness. And in your daily acts of citizenship, I've seen our future unfolding.
All of us, regardless of party, should throw ourselves into that work -- the joyous work of citizenship. Not just when there's an election, not just when our own narrow interest is at stake, but over the full span of a lifetime.
I'll be right there with you every step of the way.
And when the arc of progress seems slow, remember: America is not the project of any one person. The single most powerful word in our democracy is the word 'We.' 'We the People.' 'We shall overcome.'
Yes, we can.
