美가주포럼 김현정국장 ‘올해의 여성상’

미주류사회를 상대로 ‘위안부역사 바로 알기’ 운동을 전개해온 가주한미포럼의 김현정 사무국장이 3일 아담 시프(민주·캘리포니아) 연방 하원의원이 수여하는 ‘올해의 여성상’을 받았다.

올해의 여성상은 지역별로 총 13명의 수상자를 결정했으며 김현정 국장은 해외 최초의 위안부 소녀상이 건립된 글렌데일 지역의 대표로 수상했다.

지난달 수상자들과 축하오찬을 한 바 있는 시프 의원은 시상식에서 “김현정 국장은 1932년부터 2차 대전이 끝날 때까지 일본군에 강제로 끌려가 희생당한 20만 명이 넘는 위안부 할머니들의 피해 상황을 미국 사회에 널리 알리며 헌신했다. 우리 커뮤니티에서 큰 공헌(貢獻)을 한 여성들에게 이같은 상을 전달하게 돼 영광스럽다”고 말했다.

고운 한복 차림으로 시상식장에 나온 김 사무국장은 “가주한미포럼은 위안부 할머니들과 정의의 편에서 역사적 진실을 밝히고, 일본의 진정한 사죄를 받아내며, 미국에서 이 역사를 더욱 널리 알리기 위해서 노력하겠다”고 다짐했다.

시프 의원은 지난 2007년 미 하원에서 위안부 문제에 대한 일본 정부의 사과와 보상을 요구하는 하원 결의안(H.R. 121)이 만장일치(滿場一致)로 통과되는데 기여한 바 있다.

Congressman Schiff Announces 2017 Women of the Year

Los Angeles, CA– Today, Rep. Adam Schiff (D-Burbank) announced his selections for the 2017 Women of the Year. These inspiring women come from communities in the 28th Congressional District –West Hollywood, Hollywood Hills, Atwater Village, Burbank, Pasadena, Silver Lake, Echo Park, Elysian Valley, Los Feliz, Sunland/Tujunga, Glendale, La Cañada Flintridge and La Crescenta. This recognition is made each year during Women’s History Month.

“This remarkable group of women demonstrate the truth of the maxim that if you need something done, ask a busy person,” Rep. Schiff said. “Each has worked tirelessly to support a myriad of charitable, business and community causes, and made an indelible mark on our region. I’m honored to recognize these women and show appreciation for their extraordinary work in our community.”

Annette “Netty” Carr (Atwater Village), Holly Hampton (Echo Park), Marlene Hitt (Sunland/Tujunga), Anne-Marie Johnson (Silver Lake), Phyllis Kim (Glendale), Lena Kortoshian (La Crescenta), Camille Lombardo (Pasadena), Betty Porto (La Cañada Flintridge), Christine Rodriguez (Elysian Valley), Noemi Torres (West Hollywood), Amanda Truelove Fairey (Franklin Hills/Los Feliz), Karen Volpei-Gussow (Burbank), and Amy Yanow (Hollywood Hills).

These honorees come from all backgrounds and professions and represent the thousands of women who make a positive impact in our communities. While there are no specific criteria for nomination, Rep. Schiff looks to recognize women who — through their work or volunteerism — have improved the quality of life for our community.

Rep. Schiff will present and enter a special tribute into the Congressional Record for each woman (below). On Saturday, April 22, Rep. Schiff will honor these women at a luncheon in Echo Park.
