지금 겨울 맞아? 웃통벗은 통가 기수 화제

2016리우에서도 상반신 탈의

남태평양의 상남자에게 평창의 혹독한 추위는 아무것도 아니었다.

9일 평창동계올림픽 개막식에서 가장 눈길을 받은 선수는 남태평양 통가의 기수 피타 니콜라스 타우파토푸아(34)였다. 그는 상반신을 탈의(脫衣)한 채 통가 전통복장을 하고 나와 스포트라이트를 받았다.

피타는 2016년 리우올림픽 개회식에서도 웃통을 벗은 채 근육질의 상체를 뽐내 화제를 모았었다. 당시 리우도 약간 쌀쌀한 날씨였지만 이번엔 달랐다. 체감온도 영하 10도를 넘나드는 강추위속에 과감하게 탈의했기 때문이다.

모든 선수단과 관중들이 두터운 파커나 패딩을 입고 중무장했는데 따뜻한 남쪽나라에서 온 피타는 마치 싱그러운 봄바람속에 있는 듯 보무(步武)도 당당하게 등장하며 깃발을 흔들었다.

당초 그는 언론에 이번 동계 올림픽 개막식엔 탈의하지 않겠다고 말한 것으로 알려졌다. 하지만 그것은 위장(?)이었다. 전통복장 마나파우를 입고 상반신엔 기름칠을 한 채 한껏 남성미를 뽐냈다.

192cm의 거한(巨漢)인 그는 “전혀 춥지 않다. 이정도 추위는 아무것도 아니다”라며 스타디움을 누벼 강추위에 얼굴만 내민 주위 선수들의 눈을 휘둥그렇게 했다.

그런데 피타는 어떻게 동하계 올림픽을 모두 출전할 수 있을까. 태권도 국가대표인 그는 2016리우가 끝난 후 스키에 입문, 이번엔 크로스컨트리 스키대표로 통가 선수단에 합류할 수 있었다.

현지 언론에 따르면 그는 통가에서 롤러 스케이트로 훈련하고 산악자전거로 체력을 기른 것으로 알려졌다. 그럼에도 석달만에 대표팀에 선발되는 저력(底力)을 보였다. 더욱 놀라운 것은 평창에 와서야 눈위에서 처음 훈련할 수 있었다는 것이다.

그는 통가인 아버지와 호주인 어머니 사이에서 태어났다. 태권도는 다섯 살때부터 배웠다. 열여덟살때부터 모델도 병행하고 있다.

그는 “평창 올림픽에 출전하게 돼 너무나 흥분이 된다. 통가대표선수로서 최선을 다하겠다”고 다짐했다.

Who's Pita Taufatofua

Pita Nikolas Taufatofua (born 5 November 1983) is a Tongan taekwondo practitioner and skier from Australia. Taufatofua became widely known after footage of his appearance at the opening ceremony for the 2016 Olympics went viral.

Taufatofua was born in Australia on 5 November 1983 and raised in Tonga. He attended Tonga Side School and Tonga High School, and graduated from Saint Peter's Lutheran College in Brisbane in 2000. His father is Tongan and his mother is Australian of British descent. He began taekwondo at age five. His childhood included such traditional Tongan activities as Saturday farmwork harvesting cassava.

Taufatofua appeared as Tonga's flag bearer in the Parade of Nations during the Olympics opening ceremony, which as held on 5 August 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. During the parade, he wore nothing but a taʻovala (a Tongan mat which is wrapped around the waist), with his face and torso appearing noticeably shiny. Initially, many assumed that he was sweating profusely, but it became apparent that he had applied copious amounts of oil to his torso.

Taufatofua's shirtless, oiled-up appearance garnered him fame on social media as footage of his appearance went viral. During the taekwondo tournament, Taufatofua was eliminated in his first bout by the Iranian Sajjad Mardani once the score escalated to 16-1.
