‘한국 뉴욕주립대 아시나요.’

 

2018 세계한인언론인대회에 참석한 동포언론인들이 12일 인천 송도의 한국뉴욕주립대 캠퍼스를 방문했다.

 

2012년 개교한 한국뉴욕주립대(SUNY Korea)는 한국 정부가 국가사업의 하나로 유치(誘致)한 학부와 석박사를 모두 갖춘 국내 최초의 미국대학교다. 한국뉴욕주립대는 2012년 문을 연 스토니브룩과 지난해 가을 개교한 패션 명문 FIT 등 두 개 캠퍼스가 함께 운영되고 있다.

 

한 곳에 두 개의 학교가 있으니 ‘한지붕 두가족’인 셈이다. 두 학교 공히 홈캠퍼스와 동일한 커리큘럼 및 학위를 제공하고 있다.

 

이같은 운영이 가능한 것은 뉴욕주립대가 미국 최대 규모의 종합공립 대학교 시스템이기 때문이다. 

  

뉴욕주립대는 학생들이 3만명 가까운 종합대학부터 각각의 특성화를 갖춘 단과대학 커뮤니티 칼리지에 이르기까지 뉴욕주내에 무려 64개 캠퍼스를 갖추고 있다.

 

대표적인 대학은 한국 뉴욕주립대가 운영하는 스토니브룩(Stony Brook), 패션기술대 FIT(Fashion Institute of Technology)를 비롯, 빙햄턴(Binghamton), 버팔로(Buffalo), 올바니(Albany), 플래츠버그(Plattsberg) 등이다.

 

이날 행사는 한국뉴욕주립대 김춘호 총장의 환영 인사를 시작으로, 한국뉴욕주립대에서 운영 중인 스토니브룩과 FIT 프로그램에 대한 소개, 재학생의 캠퍼스 생활 소개 등의 순서로 약 1시간 가량 진행됐다.

 

김춘호 총장은 이날 학교 설명회에서 “창의력과 인성을 키우는 대학으로 세우고 있다”면서 “우리 학교는 학생들이 얼마나 많은 올바른 삶의 목적을 갖고 자라는지 그리고 얼마나 많이 사회에 기여(寄與)하는 학생이 되는지에 역점을 기울이고 있다”고 밝혔다.

 

김춘호 총장은 “이번 행사를 통해 세계 각국의 한인사회에서 중요한 역할을 감당하고 있는 언론인 여러분을 한 자리에서 만나게 되어 기쁘다”며 “현재 35개국에서 온 800여 명의 학생들이 공부하고 있는 한국뉴욕주립대에 전세계 한인 매체를 대표하는 여러분을 통해 학교가 알려져 우수한 학생들이 와서 학업을 이어갈 수 있기를 기대한다”고 밝혔다.

 

세계한인언론인협회 김소영 회장은 “대회 일정 중에 송도국제도시에 위치한 한국뉴욕주립대에 방문하게 된 것을 기쁘게 생각한다”며, “한인사회에서 해외 유학을 고려하는 동포 자녀들이 미국이나 유럽만이 아닌 한국에서의 유학이 좋은 대안(代案)이 될 것 같다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

 

이번 행사를 계기로 세계한인언론인협회와 한국뉴욕주립대는 협력과 파트너십을 강화하기로 협의했다.

SUNY, the Largest Comprehensive Sstems of Universities in US

 

The State University of New York (SUNY) is a system of public institutions of higher education in New York, United States. It is the largest comprehensive systems of universities, colleges, and community colleges in the United States, with a total enrollment of 606,232 students, plus 1.1 million adult education students, spanning 64 campuses across the state. Led by Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson, the SUNY system has 88,000 faculty members and some 7,660 degree and certificate programs overall and a $10.7 billion budget.

 

SUNY includes many institutions and four University Centers: Albany (1844), Buffalo (1846), Binghamton (1946), and Stony Brook (1957). SUNY's administrative offices are in Albany, the state's capital, with satellite offices in Manhattan and Washington, D.C. SUNY's largest campus is the University at Buffalo, which also has the greatest endowment and research funding.

 

The State University of New York was established in 1948 by Governor Thomas E. Dewey, through legislative implementation of recommendations made by the Temporary Commission on the Need for a State University (1946–1948). The Commission was chaired by Owen D. Young, who was at the time Chairman of the General Electric Company. The system was greatly expanded during the administration of Governor Nelson A. Rockefeller, who took a personal interest in design and construction of new SUNY facilities across the state.

 

Apart from units of the City University of New York (CUNY), SUNY comprises all other institutions of higher education statewide that are state-supported.
