뉴욕의 저명한 한인여교수가 학교측으로부터 차별 등 부당한 대우를 받았다고 폭로해 파문이 일고 있다.
뉴욕한인언론에 따르면 맨해튼 유니온신학대(Union Theological Seminary)의 유일한 아시안 종신교수인 정현경(61) 교수는 9일 학교 광장에서 발표한 성명에서 “백인 여성 총장과 학장이 내가 하지도 않은 일을 이유로 일방적으로 부당한 조치를 했다. 이에 대해 커뮤니티와 함께 맞서 싸울 것”이라고 밝혔다.

정 교수는 학교측이 지난해 3월 수업 도중 학생 간에 발생한 문제를 이유로 총장과 학장이 부당한 징계(懲戒)를 내렸다고 주장했다.
정 교수에 따르면 당시 수업을 듣던 티벳 승려가 한 흑인 여학생의 머리에 붙은 먼지를 떼어줬는데 이 장면을 목격한 백인 여학생이 ‘허락도 없이 남성이 여성을 만졌다’는 주장을 하며 승려를 비난하는 일이 발생했다.
정 교수는 “학생들과 충분히 대화해 오해하지 않도록 도왔지만 일부 학생이 학교 당국에 ‘남학생이 여학생을 성추행하도록 정 교수가 분위기를 조성했다’고 신고를 했다”는 것이다.
또한 정 교수는 “야외수업이 진행된 농장에서 학생들이 자발적으로 농장에 있던 야외욕조(hot tub)에 들어갔는데 이를 내가 강요해서 그랬다고 왜곡했다. 또 수업을 돕기 위해 왔던 남미계 교수가 수업 중 감정에 복 받쳐 울고 있던 나를 위로하며 가볍게 터치한 것을 마사지를 받았다는 식으로 조작했다”고 주장했다.
대학 측은 이후 정 교수 수업에 조교수 배정을 금지시켰으며, 매년 지급하던 지원금을 중단한 것으로 알려졌다.
이날 집회에는 정 교수를 지지하는 학생들과 동료 교수 등 100여 명도 참석했다. 이들은 “진실을 위해서는 더 이상 침묵해서는 안 된다”고 발언했다. 정 교수는 “신학자이자 교육자로서 침묵하거나 합의해서는 안 된다고 생각한다”며 “학교를 지키기 위해 교내에서 벌어지는 어떠한 차별 행위에도 맞서는 '아카데믹 미투' 운동을 벌여나갈 것”이라고 다짐했다.
지난 1996년 유니온 신학대에 아시안 최초의 여성 종신교수로 부임한 정 교수는 ‘기독교와 불교의 대화’, ‘평화 교육’ 등을 가르치고 있다.

Far from serving as a backdrop, New York City offered a microcosm some of the most pressing and complex issues of the day—an unprecedented influx of immigrants, a disturbing rise in poverty, and racial unrest in the aftermath of abolition.
Though present in new forms, Union continues to face these same challenges.
Today, the Seminary lives out this formative call to service by training people of all faiths and none who are called to the work of social justice in the world. With roots that are firmly planted in the Protestant tradition, Union actively reforms itself in response to the changing needs of the world and an evolving understanding of what it means to be faithful.
