태극기 휘날리며
Fluttering the Taeguki, the National Flag
사막과 산을 넘고 끝없는 대평원을 어떤 목표나 목적을 이루기 위하여 달리는 것이 아니라, 일상의 무미건조함에서 벗어나 아무것에도 얽매이지 않고 대륙의 초원을 달리던 버펄로처럼 자유로이 달리는 상상을 하며 대륙횡단을 위한 짐을 꾸렸다. 나 자신도 다스릴 수 없는 아련한 동경이 나의 등을 떠밀어 나는 길을 나섰다. 달리면서 품게 되는 무한한 상상력과 달리면서 튼튼해진 두 다리의 만남은 아주 어렸을 때부터 막연히 꿈꾸던 먼 곳으로 끝없는 여행을 가능하게 해주었다. 달리는 동안 나는 몸과 마음의 자유를 느낀다. 지금껏 누리지 못한 최상의 자유를 만끽할 때 어떤 삶의 목표도 존재의 이유를 잃어버리고 만다. 지금 내가 누리고 있는 이 자유가 최상의 목표가 되었고 삶을 눈부시게 만들었기 때문이다.
Instead of running across deserts and mountains and endless prairies to achieve any goal or purpose, I packed my luggage for the transcontinental, imagining myself running freely like a buffalo running freely on the grasslands of the continent, free from the dullness of everyday ordinary life. A pitiful yearning, that I could not govern by myself, pushed my back and I set out on the road. The combination of the boundless imagination and the two strong legs, which are by-products of running, enabled me to go an endless trips to the faraway places that I had dreamed of since I was very young. I feel freedom of mind and body while I am running. When I enjoy the best freedom I've never had, I lose my reason for existence. Because this freedom that I am enjoying now has become the best goal and has dazzled my life.
웨인스보로에서의 잠자리는 최악의 악몽이었다. 당초 시내에 있는 모텔을 구글맵에서 찾아서 거기서 묵으려고 찾아갔는데 생각보다 비싸다. 모텔의 요금이 거의 호텔급 요금이었다. 보통은 가격흥정도 됐는데 여기는 그것도 되지 않았다. 오랜 여행이라 비싼 모텔비는 큰 부담이다. 다시 구글맵을 찾아보니 몇 마일 더 가면 모텔이 하나 더 있다. 힘들고 피곤했지만 그곳을 찾아 갔다. 가격이 저렴하여 대금을 지불하고 샤워를 하고 피곤한 몸을 자리에 눕혔는데 뭔가 자꾸 문다. 벌레가 있나보다. 그래도 이 밤중에 선택의 여지는 없었다. 언제나 그렇듯이 이 시간에는 몸은 파김치가 되어버린다. 그대로 잠을 청해보지만 도저히 잠을 잘 수 없을 만큼 물어댄다. 할 수 없이 무거운 몸을 일으켜 모기약을 이불이고 방안에 한 병 다 뿌리고 찜찜한 잠을 다시 청해본다. 그래도 소용이 없다. 물것들은 개미떼처럼 달려들어 물어뜯는다. 나는 도저히 잘 수도 없고 그렇다고 이 한밤중에 소란을 피우면서 돈을 환불해 달라고 할 수도 없어서 짐을 싸가지고 자리를 떴다.
Sleeping in Waynesboro was the worst nightmare. At first, I found a motel in the city on Google Maps and went to stay there, but it was more expensive than I thought. The rate at the motel was almost hotel-class. Usually I could negotiate the price, but not here. It's a long trip, so expensive motel fees are a big burden. When I looked up Google Maps again, there was another motel a few miles away. I was tired but I went there. It's cheap, so I paid for it, took a shower, and put my tired body in bed, but something kept biting me. There must be a bug. Still, there was no choice at this time of late night. As always, at this time, my body becomes a gimchi or a dead body. I try to sleep, but they keep biting so deadly that I can't sleep. I can't help but raise my heavy body, and spray a bottle of mosquito repellent on the room and bed and try to sleep again. Still, it's no use. The things that bite keep biting like ants. I couldn't sleep at all, and I couldn't ask for a refund in the middle of the night,either, so I packed my bags and left the motel.
처음에 캘리포니아에서 출발할 때 이외에는 한밤중에 길을 나서지 않았다. 밤길이 위험하기도 하고 길을 잃을 염려도 있어서이다. 피로도 가시지 않은 채 나는 새벽 2시의 어두움 속에 헤드램프를 켜고 손수레에는 깜박등을 켜고 길을 달렸다. 기운도 다 소진한 사람에게 어두움은 불친절하기 짝이 없는 것이어서 몇 번이고 넘어질 뻔했다. 달리는데도 물것들은 계속 무는 지 여기저기 가렵다. 몸뿐만 아니라 신발을 신은 발바닥도 가려워 미칠 지경이다. 달리고 있는 발바닥을 물을 정도로 독종들을 만났다. 아무리 싸구려 모텔이지만 미국에서 어떻게 이런 상태에서 영업을 계속하는지 알 수가 없다. 이놈들이 옷이고 신발에도 따라붙었으니 어떻게 해야 이놈들을 다 떨쳐낼지 걱정이 태산이다. 지금껏 이렇게 독종의 물것들을 만나본 적이 없다.
I didn't set out in the middle of the night except when I first left California. It was because the night road was dangerous and it was feared to get lost. With fatigue lingering, I turned on my headlight in the dark at 2 a.m., flashing lights on my cart and ran down on the road. Darkness was unkind to a man who was exhausted, so I almost fell over and over again. The insects keep on biting so it itches here and there as I run. Not only the body, but also the sole of the foot in the shoes is itchy. I met the poisonous ones enough to bite the running soles of my feet. No matter how cheap the motel is, it is hard to understand how it continues to operate in the U.S. with this condition. I am worried about how to get rid of them all because they are in clothes and shoes. I've never met such a poisonous bite like these.
새벽에 나왔으므로 점심시간이 되기 전에 로렌스버그 Lawrenceburg 모텔에 도착했다. 도착하자마자 목욕통에 옷가지를 다 넣고 뜨거운 물을 꽐꽐 틀었다. 뜨거운 물에 검은 점의 이름을 알 수 없는 벌레들이 수 없이 떠올랐다. 비로소 피곤한 몸은 깊은 잠에 빠져들었다. 이제 지겨운 벌레로부터 해방되었다고 생각하고 다음날 아침 운동화를 신고 달리는데 발바닥을 다시 물기 시작한다. 신발도 함께 뜨거운 물통에 넣었어야 했다. 저녁 때 다시 모텔에 들어와서 어제와 같은 방법으로 세 켤레의 운동화를 모두 담그고 또 뜨거운 물을 꽐꽐 틀었다. 또다시 벌레들이 수없이 물 위에 떠올랐다. 그리고 손수레 안에도 모기약을 뿌렸다. 이제는 제발 지겨운 벌레로부터 해방되기를 간절히 빌었다. 지금 내가 믿는 신은 대자연의 정령이었다. 나는 그러고도 이 지겨운 벌레들을 완전 박멸하는데 실패하고 발바닥이나 몸을 계속 긁어야 했지만 그래도 못 견딜 만큼은 아니었다. 더 이상은 내가 손을 쓸 수가 없었다.
As I came out at the early dawn, I arrived at Lawrenceburg Motel before lunch. As soon as I entered the room, I put all my clothes in the bathtub and turned on the hot water. In the hot water, countless unknown insects emerged as the tiny black spots. At last, my tired body fell into a deep sleep. Now I think I'm free from the boring bugs. But the next morning when I run on my sneakers, they start biting my foot's bottom again. Shoes should have been put in hot water, too, last night. In the evening, I came to a motel, dipped all three pairs of sneakers in the same way as yesterday, and turned on hot water. Once again, bugs have risen on the water countlessly. And I sprayed mosquito repellent inside the wheelbarrow. Now I prayed earnestly for the release from the boring worm. The god I now believe in was the Spirit of Mother Nature. I then failed to completely exterminate these boring bugs and had to keep scratching my feet and body, but it wasn't too much to bear. I couldn't do anything more.
언제나 그렇듯이 40km가 넘어서기 시작하면 몸은 파김치가 되기 시작한다. 테네시의 작은 산간마을 화예트빌Fayetteville을 지날 때는 이미 50km가 넘기 시작했다. 어느새 대평원의 끝없는 지평선은 보이지 않고 애팔래치안 산자락에 들어섰는데 매일 오르막 내리막을 반복한다. 몸은 파김치가 되어서 흐느적거리고 있었지만 숲 한가운데서 일어나는 생생한 바람에 손수레에 달린 태극기는 힘차게 휘날리고 있었다. 그때 태극기보다도 더 힘차게 어떤 여학생이 뒤에서 뛰어오더니 숨을 몰아쉬면서 “아저씨 한국 분이세요?”하고 묻는다. 뒤이어 그녀의 룸메이트인 멕시코 학생까지 헐레벌떡 달려온다. 자기 친구가 너무 반가워서 갑자기 뛰어가니 무슨 일인가하고 쫓아왔단다. 이 마을에 온지 일 년이 넘도록 한국 사람을 한 번도 만나본 적이 없다고 한다. 이 분이 이렇게 손수레를 밀면서 달려 대륙횡단을 하시는 분이라고 친구에게 설명하는 그 여학생의 얼굴의 잔득 상기되어 있었다.
As always, when I run over 40 kilometers, my body starts to become a kimchi or a dead one. By the time I passed Fayetteville, a small mountain village in Tennessee, it had already begun to exceed 50 kilometers. Before I knew it, I could not see the endless horizon of the Great Plains, and now I entered the mountains of Appalachian, where I repeated going up and down everyday. My body was sobbing with a lot of fatigue, but Taegeukgi or the Korean flag on the cart was flying vigorously in the vivid wind that was rising in the middle of the forest. At that time, a girl jumps from the back even more powerfully than the Taegeukgi and breathes, asking, "Are you Korean?" Then her roommate, a Mexican student, comes after her, running hurriedly. The Mexican girl said that she had followed her friend to see what was going on, because her friend was so happy and ran to me. The Korean girl says she has never met a Korean in more than a year since she came to the town. The girl's face, who explains to her friend, "This is the man who runs across the continent pushing a cart like this.", was reddened with excitement.
나는 마라톤 대회에 나갈 때면 거의 언제나 가슴에 아니면 허벅지에 또는 머리에라도 태극기를 단다. 국가가 내게 달아준 태극기는 아니지만 나는 언제나 내가 한국인임을 자랑스럽게 여기며 산다. 해외에 있기 때문에 더 극명하게 내가 한국인임이 들어나고 해외에 있기 때문에 한국을 향한 그리움은 더 사무칠 수밖에 없다. 짐승이든 사람이든 살아남기 위하여 생활환경에 맞는 보호색을 띠게 마련인데 한국인들은 어디에 가든 민족의 무늬를 지우지 못하고 산다. 이름도 바꾸고 음식도 바꾸고 생활습관까지 바꾸려하지만 나는 내 한국적인 무늬가 점점 더 또렷해지는 것을 알게 되었다.
I almost always wear the Taegeukgi on my chest, thigh or head when I go to a marathon. It's not the Taegeukgi that the nation gave me, but I always live proud of being a Korean. Because I live overseas, I feel more clearly that I'm Korean, so I can't help but feel more anxious about Korea. Animals and people alike have a protective coloring to keep up with their living conditions, but Koreans cannot erase the patterns of their people wherever they go. I try to change my name, my food and my lifestyle, but I find my Korean pattern becoming clearer and clearer.
태극기를 보자 유전자 속에서 섬광처럼 일어나는 끌림이 있어 이것저것 생각 없이 내게로 달려온 것이다. 나도 이런 산간마을에서 한국 유학생을 만나서 반가웠지만 그녀의 얼굴은 분명 상기되었고 언어에서 느껴지는 떨림이 내게 그대로 전달되면서 나의 찡한 마음도 더욱 증폭되었다. 짧은 인사를 나누고 헤어져서 다시 무거운 발길을 옮기고 있는데 뒤에서 차가 한 대 쫓아온다. 뒤를 돌아보니 이제는 그 멕시코 친구의 어머니와 여동생까지 와서 같이 사진을 찍자고 한다. 그 어머니는 나를 만나서 너무 영광이라고 하면서 자기가 식당 두 개를 운영하는데 가는 길이 어느 방향인지 저녁식사도 하고 가라고 한다. 내가 가는 방향을 말해주니 가게 하나는 이미 지나쳤고 마침 그 방향에 다른 가게가 있다고 한다.
When she saw Taegeukgi, she had a flash of attraction in her genes, so she rushed to me without thinking of anything. I was also glad to meet a Korean student in such a mountain village, and I saw her face was clearly reddened and my touching impression was amplified as the tremors in her language were delivered to me. We broke up after a short greeting, and I’m moving back on my heavy feet, and then a car is coming after me from behind. I turned around and now even the Mexican friend's mother and twin sister came to take a picture together. The mother says she's so honored to meet me and asks me to go to dinner at one of her two restaurants asking the direction I'm going to run to. When I told her where I was going to, she said that I had already pased one of her shops and that there was another one in my direction.
모든 사람들이 다 그런 건 아니지만 어떤 사람들은 내가 온전히 홀로 감당하는 이 고생을 조금이라고 덜어주려고 내게 호의를 베풀면서 즐거워한다는 것을 알게 되었다. 나는 내친 김에 아직 잠자리를 못 구했는데 하룻밤 신세를 질 수 없냐고 부탁을 하였다. 그 어머니는 어디론가 전화를 하더니 그 식당 바로 옆에 전 남편이 살고 있는데 거기서 자면 된다고 한다. 결국 나는 그 식당을 찾아가 저녁식사도 하고 그녀의 전 남편인 호세가 반갑게 맞이하면서 냉장고에서 꺼내주는 코로나 맥주도 한잔 마셨다. 지금까지 여행 중에 맥주 한잔도 못 마시던 나는 이제 거의 다 왔다는 안도감으로 맥주 한잔 정도는 마시는 여유가 생겼다. 잠도 편하게 자고, 아침식사에 점심 도시락까지 싸가지고 나왔다.
Though not everyone else does, but I find some people take a pleasure in doing me a favor in order to relieve me of this ordeal even a little, which I alone bear all the burden fully. Over shoes and over boots, I asked if I could stay there overnight, saying that I didn’t find a place to sleep. The mother called somewhere and said I could sleep there with her ex-husband living right next to the restaurant. Eventually I went to the restaurant for dinner and had a glass of corona beer that her ex-husband, Jose, welcomed and handed me out of the refrigerator. Having not been able to drink a glass of beer on this hard and long trip so far, I have now gained some leeway to drink a glass of beer with relief that I've almost done. I slept comfortably and had a breakfast and even packed a lunch box. This morning, a song came out of itself while running.
그 바로 전에는 누가 차를 앞에다 세우고 나를 기다리더니 내려서 지나가다가 태극기를 보고 다시 왔다면서 자기는 DMZ에서 1 년간 근무를 했다고 한다. 의외로 이번 여행에서 한국 근무를 한 미군 출신들을 많이 만났다. 많은 이들이 그냥 지나치지 않고 차를 세워서 인사를 나누고 격려를 해준다. 중국 뷔페에서 식사비를 내주고 나간 사람도 그렇고 이 분도 우정의 표시라며 저녁식사비를 건네주고 간다. 어떤 이들은 내가 불쌍해 보여서 식사비를 준다고 하지만 내가 보기에는 미국인들은 모험가라든가 탐험가들을 존경하고 대접하고 조금이라도 마음의 성의를 표하고 싶어 한다. 우리가 결혼식이나 상갓집에 부조를 하는 것과 같은 것이다. 그것을 거절하는 것도 예의가 아닌 것 같아 기꺼이 받는다.
Right before that, someone stopped a car in front of me, got off, waited for me, and said that he had passed me and came back after watching the Korean national flag, Taegeukgi, adding that he had worked in the DMZ for a year. Unexpectedly, I met many former U.S. soldiers who worked in South Korea during the trip. They stopped by and greeted me. There were persons who paid for my meals at Chinese buffets and this gentleman also handed me over the dinner fee, saying, “This is a sign of friendship.” Some say that they give me the meal fee because I look pitiful, but I think that
Americans respect and treat adventurers, and want to express even a little bit of sincerity. It's like we, Koreans, are assisting a wedding or a funeral. So I'm glad to take it because I don't think it's polite to refuse it.
그러고 보니 지금까지 길 위에서 많은 도움의 손길을 받았다. 음료수나 먹을 것을 건네주는 사람, 돈을 기부하는 사람, 잠자리를 제공해주는 사람 특히 어느 카지노호텔에서는 VIP 손님이 왔다고 장내 멘트를 하고 무료로 계산서를 주었던 일, 운동화 가게에서도 한 켤레는 무료로 하고 한 켤레만 계산서를 주었고 자전거 가게에서도 무료로 손수레를 고쳐주기도 했다. 식사를 하고 계산서를 달라고 하면 다른 분이 미리 계산했다고 한 적도 여러 번 있었다. 오늘도 가게에서 커피 한 잔하고 작은 샌드위치를 샀는데 주인 할머니가 사과를 한 보따리 싸주신다.
Come to think of it, I've received a lot of help on the road so far. There were people who handed out drinks or food, people who donated money, and people who provided free bedding. Especially at a casino hotel, a manager commented that VIP guests had arrived, gave me a check for free. And at a sports shoe store, gave me a pair of sneakers for free, and even a bicycle shop the owner fixed my cart for free. When I asked for a bill after eating, the owner said someone had paid the bill in advance several times. Today too, I bought a cup of coffee and a small sandwich at the store. Grandmother, the owner, was packing me a bundle of apples.
많은 사람들을 길에서 만나지는 않았지만 가끔씩 만나는 사람들로부터 위로받고 격려받고 존경어린 시선을 받으며 외로움을 느끼지 못했다. 많은 사람들이 나하고 기념사진을 찍자고 다가왔고 더러는 내 사인을 해달라고 펜과 종이를 내미는 사람들도 있다. 태극기를 휘날리며 달리니 아주 좋은 일들이 많이 벌어진다.
I didn't meet many people on the street, but I didn’t feel lonely because I was comforted and encouraged by those whom I met sometimes, and shared a look with respect with them. Many people came up to take pictures with me and some people gave me pens and paper to get my autographs. A lot of good things happen when I run fluttering a Taegeukgi.
