The issues we face at the moment are many, complex, and touch on our human nature; our priorities.
Our priorities should be, hopefully, based on our vision of the world.
At the moment the vision is a very confusing concept.
The vision of some alcoholics may be to stay drunk as long, and often as possible.
The positive visions — equality, peace, freedom, respect— are complicated and face a strong opposition, namely, our own human nature.
Every election, we redefine ourselves. We try to set our vision. Hopefully.
¡°It takes a freakin¡¯ day job to understand what¡¯s going on.¡± A comment from a political townhall meeting.
Important issues are many but each election cycle is summarized/crystallized/marketed by a few slogans.
¡°A Leader, For A Change.¡± Jimmy Carter
¡°Let¡¯s Make America Great Again.¡± 1980. ¡°Morning Again in America.¡± Ronald Reagan.
¡°Experienced Leadership For American Future.¡± George H.W.Bush
¡°It¡¯s the economy, stupid.¡± Bill Clinton
¡°Yes We can.¡± Barack Obama
¡°Make America Great Again.¡± Donald Trump
Behind these slogans, there are many many story lines. Some, not easy to communicate clearly, quickly. Well, most of them.
Crucial national issues are reduced to a few slogans.
Voters are dumbed down and become, in the end, single issue voters; many without their realizing the process. Gun, life, money, privilege, etc.,etc.,etc.
A community, country is never about a single issue. Not that simple.
In a way, single issue voters made Donald possible. Look how he is handling the current crisis. No more comment on that. Good leadership matters. Well informed, critically, clearly thinking public, a must. These days, it comes before good leadership for obvious reasons.
¡°Our best days still lie ahead.¡± Joe Biden. It may work. There are many, many, many heartaches behind that line.
¡°Electability¡± sums up Biden.
Wait, isn¡¯t this election cycle making all of us a single issue voters?
